After a bit of an interval (work and holidays), here are some pictures from my latest Fescennia campaign battle, Chimare 1820, involving Arcadia and Nemea. The former are on the defence, the latter on the attack. The game was rather a see-saw affair, with Nemea expecting a clear victory, but in the end, when time was called, the Arcadians were hanging on, but in a very precarious position, outflanked and closely-pressed from behind.

An aerial view of the table, 6 foot by 4 foot, the traditional "billiard table" look for Classic Wargaming, road along the south edge, hills along the north edge with some hill top villages, and an isolated hill and marsh by the road. The Arcadians are in the centre of the picture, the Nemeans to the right along the table edge.

A long view of the table from behind the Nemean main line (columns of infantry and an artillery battery, along with several generals and their ADCs), looking towards the Arcadian positions.

Nemean infantry regiments, supported by an artillery battery and a dragoon regiment in the background, their general and his ADC to the front. Except for the latter mounted officer (a Perry hard plastic miniature), all the figures are old 25mm metal Hinchliffe Prussians.

Another view of the Nemean main line. The nearest formation is a fusilier regiment, which are the Nemean light infantry units; alongside them is a grenadier regiment, then five line infantry regiments.

The Nemean main line from the other end, with the dragoon regiment nearest.

An Arcadian battery entrenched on the isolated hill nearest the road;
25mm metal Hinchliffe figures and field piece.

The opposite flank: another battery with light infantry (more 25mm metal Hinchliffe figures) holding one of the hilltop villages.

The Arcadian main line, four infantry regiments deployed in line, along with the generals and their ADCs. The infantry are all 25mm metal Hinchliffe French figures.

A closer view of two Arcadian infantry regiments deployed in line. All figures are based as singles, whether foot, horse or artillery crews, in keeping with Classic Wargaming practice.

The action begins.
Local sheep's wool taken from wire fences makes good smoke for photographs! The rather bright green hills are a work in progress - either to cover them in flock or get some darker paint! Stepped hills like these have been around since the early days of wargaming.

The Nemean assault goes in on the isolated hill.

Artillery firing on the Arcadian left flank.

The Nemean central attack approaches the waiting Arcadian line.

The Nemean attack on the Arcadian battery on the isolated hill.

The Nemean central attack from behind their front.

On the Nemean right flank, their fusiliers deploy in open order,
supported by the grenadier regiment in column, to engage the Arcadian light infantry.

The isolated hill is captured by the gallant Nemeans and the Arcadian field piece is taken!

The Arcadian front line units open musketry fire on the approaching Nemean columns.

A view along the battlefield, with Nemean dragoons nearest the camera, while in the centre of the picture the Nemean line infantry charge home on their opponents.

Massed Nemean columns charge in against the Arcadian lines.

The opposing sides clash in the centre of the battlefield.

The Arcadian defenders have broke in rout, leaving a gaping hole in the line.
The black counters indicate that the units are "Unformed" after the melees;
the dice indicate the number of turns until those units can charge again.

A firefight breaks out across the battlefield.
The red counter in the bottom corner indicates that unit has failed one
morale test and will have to take another next turn.

The opposing cavalry engage along the road. Both regiments are dragoons, the Arcadians in yellow are 28mm Perry hard plastic figures, the Nemeans in red are 25mm Hinchliffe metal figures.

An aerial view of the battlefield, showing the arrival of the Nemean flank column in the lower left hand corner, much to the chagrin of the Arcadian commander!

The Nemean flank column, two infantry regiments and a hussar regiment,
general and ADC to the front. The infantry are all 25mm metal Hinchliffe figures,
the cavalry are 28mm Perry hard plastic figures.

The Arcadians are hastily realigning to meet the threat from behind their right flank.

An aerial view of the battlefield, with the Arcadians now fighting in two directions at once!

The closing moments of the action as the Arcadians try to keep open a line of retreat
to the top left hand corner of the picture.
