Last week was a Petaudia week, so the campaign in the Celerian Marches has continued - a goblin faction to the north in Harpagia has learned of the fighting between the East and West Marches and has intervened, sending a large raiding party south into the East March, plundering villages and marching towards the capital, Iota. The baron has marched out to meet them and battle was joined at the River Canuck. The two sides were fairly evenly matched in numbers, but the East March had more and better missile troops, plus some good cavalry. In the event, the goblins proved the better army, helped by some excellent dice rolls and some careful use of the available troops. The East March was soundly beaten and retreated in disorder to the capital, which is now under siege, thought a relief force is on the way - next month's battle in the pipeline!
Here are some photographs. The figures are 25mm, nearly all metal, with a range of manufacturers - Essex, Old Glory, Gripping Beast, Vendel, Games Workshop are those I can recall. Rules are Dragon Rampant, which I thoroughly enjoy for a quick game when playing solo - unpredictable enough to make the game interesting. I allocated the different units randomly by a dice roll - right, centre, left - and then positioned them in what I thought was the most sensible/militarily probable way. Scenery was also placed by random dice rolling. There was a random monster scheduled to appear from the tombs - 6 on a d6 if a unit passed within 6 inches of the tombs; however, no 6 was rolled, so the creature did not appear. This was part of my attempt to get more of my non-regular monsters out of their boxes and onto the table.
