A final game with my regular opponent, Steve, before the Christmas season begins: French v.s. Dutch in the 1670s, equal sides of six foot regiments, six horse regiments and a light battery, with the Dutch trying to expand a bridgehead and seize the high ground, the French trying to block their advance, both sides having troops arriving from off the table during the opening stages of the game. The scenario is based on one in C.S. Grant's Scenarios for Wargames, tweaked to fit the period. Figures are nearly all North Star 1672. Steve and the Dutch had a minor victory by the time we had to finish, being about to seize the ridge and having more fresh units in hand than the French under my command. An enjoyable game that hung in the balance for quite a while. Here are some photographs with captions.
A nice way to end the gaming year. Grant’s scenario are cropping up quite a bit recently on blogs (good), always lovely to see plenty f cavalry in a game.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for the comment. Grant's scenarios are always a good fall back for last minute games. I think a ratio of 24 foot figures to 12 cavalry figures is about right for the 1670s.
